About Us

HackIowa is a student organization at the University of Iowa, founded in 2017, that strives to grow its members personally, professionally, and academically in order to obtain careers in the technology industry. In practice, this is done by helping students prepare for, travel to, and attend hackathons. Additionally, we provide support to students through mentorship, development of application-based learning, and hands-on projects. Throughout the year, we sponsor tech talks and connect alumni and tech companies to our members.

What is a Hackathon?

Hackathons are collaborative event where people attempt to solve problems in new and creative ways. This is primarily done through programming, but it can also involve design, marketing, and hardware. Hackathons are excellent opportunities for meeting new people, learning new things, networking with companies, building your resume, getting free food, and having fun. Major League Hacking, the official student hackathon league, has more information about hackathons here.

Events Throughout the Year

HackIowa members are encouraged to travel to several hackathons throughout the year, primarily located in the Midwest region. HackIowa hosts several personal and professional development events throughout the semester, focusing on skills for programmers. We also hold open study session and project workspace times from (Time TBD). These open sessions are an opportunity to work on homework, start and receive help on a personal project, and engage with peers interested in computer science and technology.
